- How long do bamboo fences last? It depends. Bamboo poles driven into the ground become brittle around the base after around 3-5 years. Using concrete and/or wooden posts that have been charred or otherwise treated can eliminate that worry. Exposure to sun, wind, and rain will make untreated poles brittle after 5-10 years. Cleaning and staining/oiling the poles on an annual basis can extend that to several decades.
- Are bamboo fences durable? Hail and even large limbs that would normally damage treated pine fences usually bounce off good quality bamboo fences.

- How long do bamboo fence panels last? Again, it depends. How was it made? What is the quality of the bamboo? How was it made and installed? Some of the commercial, roll-up panels are deliberately weakened by the manufacturer to make a cheap product that can be hung by someone with little skill.

- Is planting a living bamboo fence a good idea? There are pros and cons to using bamboo plants as a fence. Clumping bamboo is a tropical/semi-tropical and don't know what seasons are, so they produce new shoots every couple of weeks until frost, and each shoot gets up to full height in about 3 months. So they need to be thinned by about half at least once per year, or you could do a more moderate thinning each month. Since it's a tropical, a hard freeze can damage the above ground growth, but if the root stock survives, clipping the damaged poles to the ground in the spring will allow room for new growth. If you grow a temperate running bamboo, the rhizomes spread under ground (usually in Autumn) as far as the poles are tall, so it's important to install a trench and barrier system to keep it out of your neighbors yards or any other important areas, and that barrier line need s a little annual maintenance..
